Alicante is located in the middle of the Costa Blanca. Alicante is one most important tourist destinations on the east coast of Spain. The many golf courses, along with the tranquil waters of the Mediterranean Sea, are part of the appeal of this beautiful harbour city.
The city and its harbour are flanked by the Benacantil mountain, a rocky cape crowned by the Santa Barbara fortress. Of Arab origin, the castle bears the marks of all the different peoples that the city has sheltered, although a good part of the present building only dates back to the 16th century.
The coastline is, without a doubt, the favourite leisure site for the locals of Alicante. The promenade of Explanada de Espa¤a, across from the port, is a lively boulevard, dashed with terraces and pavement caf‚s. A more modern leisure area stretches along the port's breakwater, where there are many bars and restaurants. Next to both of these places lays the urban beach of El Postiguet, a great spot for enjoying the sea and the sun.
The energy of Alicante continues throughout the year, this city is a great tourist centre. Part of the reason is certainly its closeness to the beaches of San Juan, located only a few Kms away, and the delightful towns of Santa Pola, Torrevieja, Altea, and Denia.
Along the coastline of Alicante there are many golf courses with views to the Mediterranean, great for the keen golfer.
But the visit would not be complete if the visitor does not try the delicious rice dishes, that around these parts are cooked in many different, original ways, rice with fish, black rice with cuttlefish, baked rice, and the list goes on! Best to try these dishes with some of the local wine, which is superb!
