Barcelona has boomed since the early 1990s, when preparations for the Olympic Game’s were made. It's a progressive city looking towards the rest of Europe for its inspiration and innovations. The classic tourist images of Spain seem firmly out of place in Barcelona's bustling central boulevards and stylish modern streets.
Barcelona has something to suit everyone and, despite being big enough to house over three million people, is a surprisingly easy place to find your way around, and utilise your hire car.
While for sheer size and scope Barcelona cannot compete with Paris or the world's other fashion capitals. It is "per capita" one of the world’s most stylish cities, which makes for great shopping, from designer clothes and accessories to household accompaniments. Moreover, Barcelona is a fantastic place to shop.
There are two ways to eat in Barcelona: you can go to a restaurant, or cafeteria, or eat tapas a selection of traditional Spanish dishes, a great way to try Spanish food. Good restaurants and cafés are easily found all over the city, though you'll probably do most of your eating where you will do most of your sightseeing, in the old town.
Alongside the regular bars and cafés, Barcelona also has a range of music and theme bars geared towards late-night drinking, and there's a disco and club nightlife that is currently one of Europe's most enjoyable.
The quickest and easiest way of reaching Barcelona is to fly direct to El Prat de Llobregat, the city's airport. Catalunya's the other major airport, Girona - used mainly by charter flights and less than an hour from resorts on the Costa Brava - is also handy for Barcelona.
