Girona

Your introduction to Girona

Girona is accessible by many different means, and well worth a visit. Girona international airport brings many people in every year, but if your staying in Barcelona it is an hour and twenty minutes by bus or train, and around 45 minutes by hire car from Barcelona. Girona stands on a hill, high above the River Onyar.

Girona has been fought over in almost every century since it was the Roman fortress of Gerunda on the Via Augusta, and perhaps more than any other place in Catalunya, it retains the distinct flavour of its former inhabitants. Not surprisingly, all this attention has bequeathed the city a hotchpotch of architectural styles, from Roman classicism to modernism, yet the overall impression for the visitor is of a beautiful medieval city, whose attraction is increased by its river setting.

Although the majority of modern Girona lies on the west side of the River Onyar, visitors spend nearly all their time in the old city, over the river. This small piece of land has all the sights and monuments, and it takes only half an hour walk from end to end, making it easy to explore.

Girona's stylish bars and restaurants are grouped on c/de la Força in the middle of the old city, on and around the riverside Rambla Llibertat and on the parallel Plaça del Vi; the latter two being where you'll find the best daytime cafés, with outdoor seating. Another little cluster of restaurants with good menus, del dia is over the river in Plaça de la Independencia.
