Ibiza, often called the White Island for its typical architecture, became a major centre of tourism during the 1960s being then famous for its "Hippie-Culture" and nudist beaches. Today tourism is as big as ever, aided by Ibiza International airport, bringing tourists to the island everyday. Ibiza has an ample offer for families and older visitors as well. There are still the young ones who are attracted by the island's big nightlife, it generally starts in the afternoon at the beaches and in the centre of town, to continue until the early hours in the many clubs.
When you leave the beaches behind you to explore the island's centre, you will find a unadulterated Mediterranean culture, and remains of populations that settled in Ibiza thousands of years ago, such as the famous wall-paintings of Ses Fontelles.
One of Ibiza's most famous landmarks are the salt fields on the southern tip of the island. The salt fields have been used for over 2000 years. As the water evaporates during the hot summer months, a sparkling layer of pure salt is left on the bottom of the lakes, making it one of the most beautiful spots in the world for sunset photos.
Ibiza is a Bright gem set in the blue Mediterranean. It is inhabited by small farmers and fishermen, and its gentle pastoral landscape, spotted with olive and almond trees and grape vines, simple whitewashed houses, and fortified churches, it has a timeless quality. It is an unspoiled paradise. The perfect hideaway for those who like to get away from it all, yet at the same time Ibiza has become a Mecca for the outgoing. Nevertheless, even at the height of summer there are still hidden corners in Ibiza where you can forget the twentieth century.
