Pamplona

Your introduction to Pamplona

On the lush plain of the river Arga sits Pamplona, a city jam-packed with history and deep-rooted traditions. The streets and squares this its historic area still preserve a significant compilation of monumental buildings dominated by its churches and medieval walls.

Pamplona is a city where tradition and modernity live pleasantly side-by-side. Founded by the Roman general Pompey in 75 BC, the city's importance grew in the 10th century with the kingdom of Pamplona.

A visit to the capital of the Navarre province begins with the Pamplona of the hamlets, a series of districts of medieval origin that are the foundation of the current city centre. In the central plaza Consistorial stands the stately baroque façade of the City Hall. The building, erected in 1752, commemorates the union of the hamlets of San Cernín, San Nicolás and Navarrería, and is very impressive once seen.

Pamplona is probably more famous for the "Running of the Bulls", one of the most famous events in all the country, and equally famous throughout the world. The well-known American writer Ernest Hemingway loved Pamplona for this display that is still part of the popular festival of Sanfermines, he loved bullfighting in general, and this town is one of its centres.

If you don’t wish to take part in something quite extreme as the “Running of the Bulls”, this well cared for northern- Spanish town certainly has something interesting to offer. It’s very well conserved historical centre for instance, or the picturesque mountain ranges of the region Navarra, with some of the most original folklore of all Spain. To the connoisseur’s it won't be any surprise to know, they also produce some really fine wines here that must be tried!
