Santander is a stylish city which extends over a wide bay with views of the Cantabrian Sea. This historic quarter includes a group of majestic buildings which are situated against an incredible natural backdrop of sea and mountains. Its marine and commercial tradition is linked to a century old history of tourism, which has its main attractions in the famous El Sardinero beach, the promenade and the La Magdalena peninsula that tourists visit every year, with a lot of people flying into Santander’s airport.
Santander is a city in which the mixture of its various vocations, seafaring, commercial and tourism traditions, remains patent. The city's origin is related to the Portus Victoriae founded by the Romans. However, the capital's urban development was not to come about until the XI c. when the town began to grow around the San Emeterio abbey. From its Latin name, Sancti Emeterii, comes the current name of Santander.
The centre of Santander is where you will find most of the shops, businesses and services, as well as the greater portion of monuments and tourist attractions.
The centre is also characterized by its commercial road and rail network. All along a series of streets, most of which are lined with shops on the ground floor, you can buy nearly anything or simply indulge in window-shopping.
A little further east, near Plaza de Cañadío, there is a group of streets where most of the nightlife is concentrated; they are full of bars and cafés where you can stop for a drink or some tapas, as well as numerous options if you want to have a boogie until the early hours!!
